SENESCHAL’S RAMBLINGS
Greetings unto the Shire of Sterlynge Vayle from your Seneschal, Lord Eoghan Rorikson.

As we slide into the winter, we put aside our swords and shields.. Oh WAIT!!! Sir Magnus Tindal & Lady Marianna Pietrosanti have succeeded in their quest to find us a winter fight spot! So for the first time in several years, fight practice will continue through out the winter! In addition, the word in the wind is that there will occasionally be fencing practice there as well! So continue to work on those martial activities ALL WINTER LONG!!!! This isn't to say that you shouldn't also focus on your arts and sciences, but the opportunity for fighting is still there!
We have a couple of things in the works right now - From our upcoming Schola - to a presentation at the Binghamton Rotary Club. While more of this will be discussed at the business meeting in November - on Nov. 21st we have been invited to do a presentation for the Rotary luncheon. I am hoping to have a couple of people come out with me - to demonstrate Armor and Garb as well as our presentation boards. If you can make it, please let me know ASAP as lunch WILL be provided!
Lady Anne has planned some great Arts and Sciences meetings - so please come on out! If you don't see anything you are interested in - let her know she will be happy to schedule it.
That's all I have this month, I remain yours in service,
Lord Eoghan Rorikson

NO FISH SHALL UNMAKE ME
The Infamous Pirate Event was the first event I ever went to in our Shire, so my memory is fuzzy and I may get the fine details wrong, Eanraig, our Seneschal, had decided there Must Be Entertainment at Feast! He concocted a bowl of porridge that he had allowed to congeal for more than three days - designed to be vile and unappetizing, for this was to be his Threat. He went to each of the five tables in turn, placing the pot on the table, crying, "You must entertain the Hall or dine on the Pot!" One table told a story, another sang a song of the East, because not many of AEthelmearc’s songs were known in our backwater. I remember we sang Happy Birthday to Eanraig for our table's turn.
Then the pot was placed on the last table - where Keran, Leah (who had never heard of the SCA before this day) and Solveig sat. You know Keran as well as I do - she is not one to push herself forward and is too stubborn to eat from the Pot. Leah, being new, did not deserve such a burden. So Solveig bravely stood, and offered to entertain the Hall. When you know Solveig, you will know she does not sing well, and her tales - well, we had not that much time to listen that evening. So instead she bravely volunteered to face the Mackerel Pit for the entertainment of the Hall.
Now, the Mackerel Pit was Eanraig's evil genius at work, and a better idea of his is very hard to find. He made two large fish stuffed with newspaper and painted them to look like mackerels. He threatened to soak them in tuna juice, but I think the combatants were grateful he never found the time for that. The combatants entered the pit blindfolded, were handed a fish and then spun by a marshal. Then they were told to Lay On, with the first good hit declared the winner. This was high entertainment indeed.
Solveig was therefore blindfolded and brought to the middle of the Hall. Someone volunteered to be an opponent (and I think it was one of Sir Garanhir's daughters, but I don't remember exactly). We did not blindfold the girl, so she could dart in and hit Solveig quickly as a kindness. Solveig spun dutifully and grasped a fish firmly by its tail. Then the call came, "Lay on!" And Solveig sprang forward, flailing mightily! So mighty was her blow, she hit a young squire at a table, and the table, knocking him and his feast gear flying through the hall. "HOLD!" was called and Solveig's blindfold removed so that she could see the damage she had wrought. Alas, the squire's pottery cup was in shards and could not be saved.
So the next year, on the anniversary of the Pirate Event, Eanraig made a wooden cup and engraved upon it an image of Solveig hoisting a fish and the Runes, "I am Solveigbane, and No Fish Shall Unmake Me!" to be given to the young squire.

WORDS FOR THE MONTH
SCHOLA, COLLEGIUM and UNIVERSITY - an SCA event of organized classes. A great place to learn new skills, study cultures and countries, learn some history, share your skills, and meet some really smart and knowledgeable people. Some are themed for fighting, clothing, Viking culture, or other subject areas. Excellent for newcomers. (Remember to come to ours in January.)
EVENT TOKEN - proof that you paid, usually a bead or at Pennsic a medallion. Can be anything from a colored ribbon to a beaded wine charm.
